1984 by George Orwell

"People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word."

1984 is George Orwell's follow-up to Animal Farm. The book is Orwell's imagining of a dystopian future where everything is controlled by Big Brother.
Terms like Big Brother, Newspeak, Doublethink, Thoughtcrime have become part contemporary language.
First published in 1949, it is regarded as one of the best novels of all time. Modern Library ranked 1984 thirteenth on its list of 100 best English novels of the 20th century.

You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world

A very thought provoking book. How right has Orwell been?

  5. @Randall, A fantastic read indeed. Couple this with Huxley's Brave New World and you have two extremes of where we might be heading.

  6. This book is in my top 5 books. Much better than animal farm IMO. I've never read Brave New World, but it is definitely on my list to check out.

  7. Anyone who has not read this book is missing out. Orwell is an excellent author, both in the concepts he uses and the writing he executes with.

Love the blog, by the way. Keep up the good work!
